Replacing fossil carbon feedstocks with renewable alternatives requires a range of technological pathways beyond electrification. High Temperature Winkler® (HTW®) gasification offers a promising solution, producing high-quality synthesis gas from waste-based feedstocks with limited pre-treatment requirements.

Researchers from Technische Universität Darmstadt and GIDARA Energy have investigated the use of B-type waste wood from construction and demolition as a feedstock for HTW® gasification.

At the Technical University of Darmstadt, a 500 kWth HTW® pilot plant operated for more than 100 hours in autothermal mode at atmospheric pressure, converting over eight tonnes of pelletised waste wood using oxygen and steam.

The experimental results demonstrate that higher operating temperatures can improve carbon conversion to above 90%, reduce gravimetric tar formation and enhance synthesis gas quality.

These findings provide valuable experimental data and support the further development and scale-up of HTW® gasification for converting waste wood into a valuable resource for sustainable chemical and fuel production.

The upcoming scientific paper, developed by Philipp Eiden-Göbel and colleagues from Technische Universität Darmstadt, together with Dr Avishek Goel, Stella Theodoraki and Avikar Saberwal from GIDARA Energy and their research teams, will provide further insights into the experimental campaign and its results.
